Assess the severity

• Since it’s in the cap end, that’s one of the least structurally critical parts of the pen. The main concern is cosmetic—how much of the crack will be visible and whether it will compromise strength.

• A diagonal crack is tricky because even with the clip, some of it will likely show.

2. Options for dealing with it

a) Fill and disguise the crack

• Use CA glue (thin or medium) or epoxy to fill the crack.

• After curing, sand and polish as usual. The clip might hide most of it, and a filled crack can sometimes blend in, especially on darker or patterned acrylics.

b) Embrace it as a feature

• Sometimes a crack can be treated as a natural accent. A light CA polish can make it less noticeable. If you like the look of “character” in your work, this could work.

c) Salvage the blank

• If the crack is too distracting, you can shorten the blank slightly and make a smaller cap, if your pen design allows. This removes the crack entirely.

• Alternatively, you can use the blank for a different pen style where the cracked area ends up in a less visible location.

3. Prevent future surprises

• When using acrylic blanks, especially large or expensive ones, some turners drill a small hole at the suspected weak end to check for internal stress before turning. It’s a bit of extra prep, but it can save heartbreak.
